TYPE OF DEFINITION

In Human Design, a Definition is created when two harmonic gates meet through a channel, activating consistent energy between the connected centers. This defines certain aspects of who you are, operating consistently throughout your life. The number and arrangement of these defined channels can vary greatly from one individual to another, shaping unique psychological and mental patterns. In this article, we will explore the four main Types of Definition and how they influence your overall life force.

SINGLE DEFINITION

single definition

All defined centers and channels are directly interconnected with each other, as if they were all forming one single circuit for the way in which their life force operates. Over 40% of human beings have this type of definition, which clearly reveals the great diversity of ways in which this characteristic that they have in common manifests in each and every one of them.

Because everything that is part of their inherent life force is integrated into one singular area of Definition, they tend to be very fixed in their attitudes and approach towards interaction with others, as they live under the permanent pressure to jump onto mental conclusions as a way to simplify their perception of ‘reality’ as much as they can. This creates a psychological conflict inside of them, as it predisposes them to oppose resistance to the very same things that they actually need in their personal experience.

The key is in the daily management of their open centers. As long as they identify with the not-self strategies of their open centers, they’re bound to initiate and establish personal connections with those that can bring ‘Definition’ to what they perceive to be missing in them, while simultaneously they oppose resistances trying to ‘control’ the price that they are willing to pay for the ‘exchange’. Always with a pretended inner sense of keeping their own ‘independence’ in the interaction, which can nurture a rather practical but also mundane sense of the purpose of relationships altogether, as what each ‘Single Definition’ wants or needs from others tends to be something that can be offered by many.

Because of this, when it comes to relationships, their common motto is: “I don’t want any problems.”

The ‘Type of Definition’ in Human Design forms the foundation for the way the rational mind is going to develop in our early childhood, trying to compensate for the ‘shortcomings’ that it seems to perceive in what appears to be consistent within one’s own nature. This early conditioning shapes the attitudes of our ‘mental body’ or ‘mentality’ through which the not-self mind learns to waste our individual life by searching for an inexistent place of conclusive ‘Singularity’.

DOUBLE SPLIT DEFINITION

double split definition

All defined centers and channels are split in two separate areas of ‘Definition’ that are NOT directly interconnected with each other, forming two islands that can never be bridged by oneself on the inside, and always seems to require the presence and intervention of reliable others in one’s own affairs in order to be able to understand oneself. Each of these two ‘islands’ has its own consistency in the perception of ‘reality’, which fuels a predisposition for the perception of apparent ‘contradictions’ in life that prevents them from experiencing ‘Wholeness’ within themselves without the intervention of others.

It is only that, oppositely from the ‘Single Definition’, it is not enough for them to find someone who can provide ‘Definition’ to what they may perceive to be missing through their open centers, because they are driven at a deeper level to develop a sense of ‘Wholeness’ within themselves, before they can truly open up to another human being.

This makes them naturally more selective in their social experiences, as what they are really looking for without knowing it, is for those who carry the specific gate(s) that can act as a bridge between their two islands. As a consequence, when they meet someone who carries any of the gates that can act as a bridge between their two split areas of ‘Definition’, they immediately feel whole in their company and can therefore develop a great deal of attachment in the way they interact with them.

Over 45% of human beings have this type of definition, which clearly reveals that there is a great division in the way human relationships have been approached historically, so often attributing the extreme differences in their predisposition for human social interaction between the ‘Single Definition’ and the ‘Double Split Definition’ to the nature of gender. Of course, males have always been considered to be more like ‘Single Definition’, and females more like ‘Double Split Definition’, as they are ‘normally’ considered to be more predisposed for co-dependency.

Since 1781 we have been witnesses to deep transformations in the way relationships are perceived and experienced in our species, that clearly reveal the blindness of the moral prejudices that we have been living under when it comes to make associations between human psychology and gender.

As attachment as a replacement of genuine love always brings problems, the way these problems are dealt with by their homogenized minds is different, depending on whether just one gate will be enough to bridge the split in the ‘Double Definition’, or if a combination of gates, or a channel and a gate will be needed in order for the split to be bridged.

  • Small Split: Split by one missing gate. “I am the problem.”

  • Large Split: Split by a full channel or more. “Everybody has a problem with me.”

TRIPLE SPLIT DEFINITION

triple split definition

All defined centers and channels are split in THREE separate areas of ‘Definition’ that are NOT directly interconnected with each other, forming THREE islands that can never be bridged by oneself on the inside, resulting into such a scattered perception of what supposedly is ‘real’, that contradictions are not only no longer seen as a problem that needs to be solved, but rather as something unavoidable in the perpetually changing flow of events.

Now, this is when the carrier of a ‘Triple Split Definition’ is aware of their condition and applies ‘Strategy & Inner Authority’ to their way of making decisions for themselves. Otherwise, this ‘Type of Definition’ is unavoidably doomed to become distorted by its own inner psychological chaos.

Because it takes a minimum of six defined centers to be a ‘Triple Split Definition’, they tend to be very fixed in their characteristics and, like ‘Single Definitions’, their mind is focused on bringing ‘Definition’ to their open centers. However, given the complexity of their live force, they cannot be satisfied with having just one person as a consistent source of ‘Definition’ to their open centers, as the diversity of ways in which their life force can be bridged by others is so big that they can never make their minds up about which of all the variations they know to stay with.

Only a slice of 10% of human beings are carriers of this ‘Type of Definition’ in their design, and what they all have in common is the difficulty in finding comfort in establishing traditionally orthodox relationships, no matter what culture they are in. This underlines the importance of following ‘Strategy & Inner Authority’ in their daily lives as a way to orchestrate the diversity of human resources that they each embody uniquely.

QUADRUPLE SPLIT DEFINITION

quadruple split definition

All defined centers and channels are split in FOUR separate areas of ‘Definition’ that are NOT directly interconnected with each other, forming FOUR islands that can never be bridged by oneself on the inside, leading to an inner state of scatteredness that cannot be fixed by any singular gate that acts as bridge.

As there are less than 1% of human beings carrying this kind of ‘Type of Definition’, the opportunities for empirical observations are very scarce, but logic suggests that their dilemma is very similar to that of the ‘Split Definition’; co-dependency and the impossibility of having an integrated perception of themselves. As one needs to have a minimum of eight defined centers in order to be a ‘Quadruple Split’, these beings are extremely fixed in their nature, which may not be visible at first given their gifts to connect with practically everyone they have around, which does not mean that they can find their signature and sense of ‘Wholeness’ with any of them.
